Parī (ਪਰੀ)

Parī (ਪਰੀ), meaning both “angel” and “fairy” in Punjabi, was a cherished nickname given to the artist by their grandmother. The wings worn in the photograph are a handcrafted tribute to the artist’s maternal grandmother, who passed away last year. In yogic tradition, the back is believed to carry the past. Here, the memory of the past is transformed into a site of metamorphosis, sprouting wings instead of a burden on one’s back. The wings are embedded with photo-transferred images of the artist’s grandmothers in Punjab, merging memory with material. Honoring all the women in the artists' lineage who, through quiet resistance and everyday strength, made space for each generation to experience more freedom than the last. In this reimagining, mourning becomes movement —a movement towards a matriarchal future.
